The study Fibrous Futures – Thinking Long-Term for New Material Cultures, explored a series of practical experiments, mappings, and reflections around different plant fibres and related craft techniques. The aim was to develop a broader understanding of historical precedents and fibre qualities, as a foundation for assessing future possibilities.
The study resulted in a diversity of techniques and examples that demonstrate the unwanted plants’ potential as fibre resources. Ultimately, it points towards how design can contribute to long-term planning and the development of new, sustainable material cultures — where knowledge of plants, fibres, and craft practices forms a basis for future ways of making and thinking.
